The 1991 World Series pitted two teams that had seen recent success after years of futility. The Twins had won the 1987 Series over the St. Louis Cardinals, and returned four years later to face the resurgent Atlanta Braves, who would dominate in the 1990s, winning eight division titles, five National League championships, and one World Series. Behind a young and talented pitching staff including Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Steve Avery, the Braves took a 3–2 lead as the series returned to the Metrodome. The game was tied 3–3 after the ninth, and Kirby Puckett lead of the bottom of the 11th inning against Charlie Liebrandt.
