Padres Tony Gwynn's 3000 Hit Print
Tony Gwynn’s 3,000th hit was never a matter of if he’d get it or not, just a matter of when it’d happen. Mr. Padre singled against the Expos in the first for the historic milestone as part of a 4-for-5 day at the dish. Gwynn became the 22nd member of the 3,000 hit club, and the first to reach the mark as a member of the Padres. Of the 30 players with 3,000 hits, Gwynn ranks fourth among them in career batting average.
Gwynn and fellow Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs smacked their 3,000th hits on back-to-back days, the only time that has happened in Major League history. Interestingly enough, Gwynn’s 3,000th hit came on his mother’s birthday and exactly six years to the day after his 2,000th.
