Pirates Clutch Cutch - 12" x 16" Print
Even though it was only mid-July, a series between the Cardinals and Pirates had big postseason implications. The teams were in first and second, respectively, in the NL Central and the series presented the Bucs with a perfect opportunity to close a gap in the standings. The score was tied after nine innings, so to extras they went.
Both teams scored in the 10th inning before going hitless for the following three frames. Then, the Redbirds took the lead once more on an RBI single to go up 5-4. In the bottom of the 14th, Neil Walker led off with a single and Andrew McCutchen drilled a 1-2 pitch out to deep center to win the game. It was McCutchen’s fifth-career walk-off home run. The Buccos’ win was their first of two-straight, 6-5, extra-inning victories over the rival Cardinals.
