It might sound crazy now that we have MLB.tv and MLB Network, but baseball wasn’t always on 24 hours a day back in the ‘80s. There was just one televised “Game of the Week” that baseball fans could turn their attention to outside of their local squads’ broadcasts. On June 23, 1984, the Game of the Week featured the Cubs and their midwestern rivals, the Cardinals. Fast forward to the bottom of the 9th — Ryne Sandberg is at the dish, down a run, facing Bruce Sutter, the Cards’ elite closer, who entered the game with a 1.19 ERA. Sandberg tied the game with a solo shot to send the game to extras.

One inning later, Sandberg again found himself representing the tying run, down two this time with a runner on base. He bested Sutter once more and tied the game for a second time. The Cubs went on to win in the 11th inning. Sandberg finished the day 5-for-6 with those two game-tying homers and 7 RBI. Credit this game with introducing the future Hall-of-Famer to a national audience.
